Robert Chambers; Anthony Ireland
Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation
London, W. & R. Chambers, 1884. Cloth. A twelfth edition of this work of speculative natural history and philosophy by Robert Chambers. Twelfth edition. With a portrait frontispiece. A work of speculative natural history and philosophy originally published anonymously. It brought together various ideas of stellar evolution with the progressive transmutation of species in an accessible narrative which tied together numerous scientific theories of the age. The work was well received by Victorian society and became an international bestseller. However, its unorthodox themes contradicted the natural theological theories of the time and were reviled by clergymen and by scientists. Written by Robert Chambers, a Scottish publisher, geologist, evolutionary thinker, author and journal editor who was highly influential in mid-nineteenth-century scientific and political circles. With an introduction by Anthony Ireland. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine resulting in minor loss to the head. Front hinge tender with rear hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound with frontispiece detached but present. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the first and last few pages. Contemporary inscription to the title page with the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
