Book condition : very good. - Vermoedelijk getekend door Jan Lavies (1902-2005). Uitgeverij Kompas in Den Haag was tijdens de Duitse bezetting van Nederland kampioen op het gebied van de geestige uitgaven, die uiterlijk anti-Duits waren, maar eigenlijk de bezetter steunden. Deze uitgaven hadden de teneur dat de grootste ergernis over de bezetting de inbeslagname van fietsen betrof. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn het blad 'De Gil' en dit boekje. Het onderwerp van dit boekje is de schaarste (hongerwinter) en het vorderen van fietsen door de bezetter. A coloured illustrated doornob-sign, designed by Jan Lavies (signed in print on recte), depicting a Bulldog guarding the Cabin-door of a passenger travelling by Holland-America Line. Appropriate text printed on recto/verso, original thin cord preserved. SCAN AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. A beautiful piece of design by Jan Lavies in excellent condition. Rare in such great condition.

Den Haag-Scheveningen, N.V. Indisch Restaurant Waroong Djawa, [circa], 1938. Original coloured and lithographed advertising card (picture postcard), 15x10.5cm., published by the first Indonesian Restaurant in Holland Waroong Djawa, established 1912, at the Hague and Scheveningen. Designed by Jan Lavies. Front side with a horizontal picture illustrating a row of waiters dressed in the Indonesian way in white with tranditional head-scarves, serving a rice-table to a customer sitting at his table. Card signed in print Jan Lavies. Verso with company's informative text, partly in english, at tail margin. SCAN AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. The Waroong Djawa, a The Hague based Indonesian restaurant, later with an affiliate at Scheveningen (up till 1940), was founded in 1912, presenting to the dutch public Indonesian food. This card has been designed by Jan Lavies and is in coloured lithography, unused. Fine copy.

Two illustrated dutch language parodies in cartoons with rhymed captions, in which deprivation of energy and impounding of bycicles during the nazi occupation of Holland during the Second Worldwar, 1940-1945, thus frustrating means of heating, cooking and transport of the dutch population. Very good copy.
