(Chapbook - Religion) A.A.
(ca. 1790?) Original blue wrapper, (56)pp. Ca. 20 x 16,5 cm.Title (with woodcut) within woodcut borders; nice copy of a rare late 18th (?) century edition of this popular Catholic catechism and chapbook; used at schools in the Southern Netherlands (Flanders) since the early 17th century. The approbation is of 1740; 3 large woodcuts (i.a Mary with her child and the Lord with little Jesus on a half moon, both with typographical borders) in the text and 51 beside are devotional. A narrow strip of paper (with on the verso side a little loss of text) cut out on page (2/3); otherwise a very good copy. Vanderhaeghen IV, 7383 mentions a similar copy by Bernard Poelman without date and in the notes: IV, 7438 & 7532; not found somewhere else (not even in The Children's World of Learning with similar copies: 1237; 1238 & 1239).

(Till Owlglass - Chapbook) A.A.
Lelis (i.e. Caen), F. Goderfe (i.e. Chalopin), (ca. 1820). Original blue paper wrapper, 24pp. With woodcut medaillon-portrait on the titlepage (supposedly of Ulenspiegel, but used in other chapbooks by Chalopin as was usually the case). The imprint should be read as "à Sillé [le Guillaume] chez Deforge, rue de Mayenne". But the bookseller Deforge died in 1809 and this is in fact a pirate edition by Pierre-Jean-Aime é Chalopin, printer in Caen from 1777? to 1822. Koopmans-Verhuyck 66; Oberlé, La Bibliotheque Bleue, 273; Children's World of Learning 1911; not in Hinz, nor in Tijl Uilenspiegel Wereldburger. Very fine copy.
