Promotional Poster / Brochure for the Palace Hotel in San Francisco - Specifically the Rose Room Featuring the World's Most Celebrated Dancers the de Marcos and Ronnie Kemper and His Orchestra
San Francisco, CA: The Palace Hotel, 1942. Other. B&W Illustrations; 1942. This is a brochure / promotional poster (approx. 15" x 10 1/2 " features a photo of The De Marcos on the inside and the details of their preformances on the other side. The promotional piece folds twice to make a brochure. "Completely rebuilt from the ground up, the "New" Palace Hotel opened on December 19, 1909, and quickly resumed the role of its namesake predecessor as an important San Francisco landmark as well as host to many of the city's great events. While externally much plainer than the original Palace, the new "Bonanza Inn" is in many ways as elegant, sumptuous, and gracious on the inside as the 1875 building. The "Garden Court" (also called the "Palm Court") —which occupies the same area that the Grand Court did in the earlier structure—has been one of San Francisco's most prestigious hotel dining rooms since the day it opened. Equally famous was the "Pied Piper" Bar located just off the gleaming polished marble lobby, which was dominated by Maxfield Parrish's 16-by-6-foot (4.9 by 1.8 m) , 250-pound (110 kg) painting of the same name. The Ralston Room, named for co-founder William Ralston, is off the main lobby to the left of the painting. " (from Wikipedia) "DeMarco was born in Buffalo, New York, on 1 January 1898. He was the son of a farmer, whose father had lost the family mill in Palermo through neglecting business to dance at folk festivals around Italy. De Marco became a dancer despite his father's opposition. He began his career as a solo dancer, then with partners, in burlesque and vaudeville, in the prohibition-era speakeasies. De Marco danced with several female partners, of whom the best known were his wives. Tony's first wife was Nina Kroner and his second Renée. Tony and Renee began dancing together when he was 29 and she was 16. He was best known for his performances with his third wife, Sally Craven, a ballet dancer. Sally Craven doubled for Vivien Leigh in the long shots of dances in Gone with the Wind (1939). " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .

EPHEMERA [PASADENA, CA] [CALIFORNIANA] [ROSE PARADE], Group of Ephemera - Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade
EPHEMERA [PASADENA, CA] [CALIFORNIANA] [ROSE PARADE]
Group of Ephemera - Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade
Pasadena, CA, 0. Other. This group of ephemera consists of four souvenir photograph packets for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade (from the years: 1929, 1931, 1932 & 1941) along with a button featuring Michigan State from 1961-62. All four of the souvenir photographs are in Very Good+ condition. Two of the packets have been addressed (the one from 1932 includes the stamp and was mailed). The souvenir pin from 1962 is in Very Good- condition, with some rubbing, ground-in dirt and toning. "This event began as a promotional effort by Pasadena's distinguished Valley Hunt Club. In the winter of 1890, the club members brainstormed ways to promote the "Mediterranean of the West." They invited their former East Coast neighbors to a mid-winter holiday, where they could watch games such as chariot races, jousting, foot races, polo and tug-of-war under the warm California sun. The abundance of fresh flowers, even in the midst of winter, prompted the club to add another showcase for Pasadena's charm: a parade would precede the competition, where entrants would decorate their carriages with hundreds of blooms. The Tournament of Roses was born. "In New York, people are buried in snow," announced Professor Charles F. Holder at a Club meeting. "Here our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let's hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise." uring the next few years, the festival expanded to include marching bands and motorized floats. The games on the town lot (which was re-named Tournament Park in 1900) included ostrich races, bronco busting demonstrations and a race between a camel and an elephant (the elephant won). Reviewing stands were built along the Parade route, and Eastern newspapers began to take notice of the event. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed to take charge of the festival, which had grown too large for the Valley Hunt Club to handle." (from Wikipedia). Very Good .
