The twenty-third edition of this work in a full calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine and boards. All edges gilt. This set is handsomely bound by J.C. Wilbee, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free end paper. Bookplate to the front paste down. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay (1800-1859) was a British historian and Whig politician. This is a collection of his biographies of well-known and influential British figures: Francis Atterbury (1663-1732), John Bunyan (1628-1688), Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) and William Pitt (1759-1806).
