First edition, 4 vols., 4to (274 X 212 mm), 240 engravings on 219 plates, numerous woodcuts, this copy with 26 extra illustrations bound in and itemised by a former owner at the front of each volume, marbled endpapers, bound in contemporary half red morocco by Edmond & Spark, Bookbinders, Aberdeen, joints and corners rubbed. A work of considerable influence on the Gothic revival and the first to bring to the attention of the public the medieval antiquities North of the Border. Provenance: From the library of Josceline Grove, with bookplate and their typed catalogue description pasted to front endpapers.
