SHAW, SIMEON. - The Chemistry of the Several Natural and Artificial Heterogenous Compounds, Used in Manufacturing Porcelain, Glass, and Pottery.

London, printed for the author 1837. Stout octavo later quarter calf (maybe mid 20th century); xliv, 685pp, addenda leaf, portrait; bound with blank leaves at the end of each section. Repairs in the gutter of the title and two leaves of subscribers; the portrait foxed, minor flaws and a perfectly decent copy. ¶ From a notice seen in another copy of this we know that 250 copies were printed; it's quite rare. Fundamental in the progress of ceramics from a secretive art to a scientific industry, the list of subscribers gives some indication of the expectation that the industry had for the results of Shaw's researches; it starts with Spode and Copeland and runs through an impressive roll of manufacturers, colourers, and merchants.
