WALDSTEIN, CHARLES. - Essays on the Art of Pheidias.

Cambridge Univ Press 1885 Large octavo half morocco (a touch of wear to the spine top); xvi,431pp, 16 plates, 25 illustrations through the text. Ex parliamentary library with their gilt crest on the front board and incorporated into the spine, no other markings; spotting of the outer couple of pages and at the edges of a few plates but a handsome copy. ¶ Waldstein championed classical archaeology as an independent branch of study, demanding its own aims and method - rather than just a maid-servant to classical literature and allied fields - and played a large part in the establishment of a department of classical archaeology at Cambridge University. His essays here seek to define a science and expound method by illustrating, in a series of separate investigations, his own discoveries.
