Ex parliamentary library with their gilt crest on the front board and incorporated into the spine, no other markings; some foxing of outer few pages and plates but quite a good copy. ¶ An appealing introduction to the applied sciences with (among many others) chapters on fire engines, atmospheric railways, ballooning, speaking trumpets, musical instruments, mirrors and reflecting instruments, lighthouses, the microscope, the telescope, stereoscope, photography (and the printing processes from photography), steam power, locomotives, the compass, telegraphy, electric clocks, electric lighting and so on. Three of the colour plates are microscopic details, the other is a dashing plate of fire-fighting.
