HOLLAND, SIR HENRY. - Essays on Scientific and Other Subjects ..

London, Longman &c 1862. Octavo publisher's cloth (spine a bit worn); 504pp. ¶ Second edition, hard on the heels of the first, carefully revised with additions demanded by the "rapid advancement of physical science even in the short interval of two months since the first edition was published" (preface). A good admixture of essays on physical and natural sciences, modern chemistry; meteors, sidereal astronomy, Australia and coral reefs, atomic theory, &c, and an essay on Julius Caesar. Holland, physician to the stars and travel writer, may be more remarkable for who he knew - everyone - than what he knew - a bit about of a lot of things. This wide ranging curiosity is, after all, a mark of charm.
