Leporello-folded album with thirty colour woodblock-printed illustrations. Title and colophon in Japanese. Original decorated boards, rubbed, mainly along edges. The plates depict classical motifs such as hieroglyphs and cuneiform from Egypt, Assyria, Persia and Greece. Several of the illustrations recreate old motifs from murals and ceramics. The editor Sawada S›zan (or Seiichir›) was a famous Japanese potter and designer who developed works full of originality. He belonged to a well-known group of Kyoto potters (including Kiyomizu Rokubei) who distinguished themselves through very fashionable and high-quality work. Some browning and light staining, partly slight discolouration, a few tears to gutters, marginal staining to two plates (20 and 28). Binding slightly shaken. Rare.
