One hundred and seventy-six fine hand-colored engraved plates (nos. 1131-1305) of which sixteen are double-page folding. The first one hundred and fifty plates are clean and fresh, the last twenty six plates have some offsetting from the text. Contemporary full tan calf, covers decoratively bordered in gilt, spines with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, red morocco labels lettered in gilt, joints splitting but holding firm. A very good representative example from this great work. The Botanical Register was published in thirty-four volumes (including Index) from 1815-1847. The complete run has 2,716 hand-colored engraved plates and three plain engravings making a total of 2,719 plates. The Botanical Register was founded by Sydenham Edwards in 1815 to promote an understanding of ornamental flowers cultivated in British gardens. It concerns mostly Mediterranean and more exotic species. Edwards had been one of the original botanical artists for Curtis's Botanical Magazine. The Botanical Register published superb botanical engravings for each issue. All were delicately colored by hired artists and the larger plates were folded into the text.
