London, Chapman & Hall. 1867, First Edition. Half Leather, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Elton joined the French forces in the latter years of the war during the reign of the Emperor Maximilian in the War of the French Intervention just as the French forces were hastily departing that country. It does not mention the battle of Camerone but does provide severla other mentions of the French Foreign Legion, vivid descriptions of the country and irregular warfare with many engraved illustrations from sketches by Elton and some bt Count de Montholon who was a staff officer to General Douay. CONDITION Pebble cloth bds, Leather spine with 5 raised bands and Leather cnrs, publishers speckling to all edges, pp xii 206, 41 nice illus and 3 maps. Ex Library copy with gilt stamp to front, and only 3 library stamps near front and tidy number to front pastedown (no other library markings). Internally very bright and crisp. Faults are slight insect damage to spine head and minor scuffing to leather, damp stain to bottom edge of 3 pages and bottom cnr of last blank torn away. Good.
