This richly illustrated book is an introduction to Japan's spectacular kabuki theatre, placed in the historical and social context of pre-modern Japan bet- ween 1603 and 1912. Many aspects of kabuki, such as the evolution of the theatres, acting traditions, stage conventions, costumes and make-up are discussed and illustrated. The interaction between kabuki theatre and kabuki print designers are explained in a concise histo- rical overview of Japan's unique actor-print tradition as it developed in Edo (present-day Tokyo) and the Kamigata (Osaka-Kyoto) region. A large section of the book is devoted to retellings of 37 popular kabuki plays, many of which are still performed. Each retelling is preceded by a short intro- duction detailing the origin and characteristics of the play, and is supplemented with notes on theatrical customs and anecdotes. Main scenes of the plays and leading actor roles are illustrated by colourful wood- block prints designed by famous artists active from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. The bibliogra- phy includes up-to-date references to important publi- cations about kabuki in Western languages. Heroes of the kabuki stage is unique for its extensive index on playwrights, actors, print artists, publishers, roles, sub- jects and attributes, which will enable readers and print collectors to find their way in the fascinating world of kabuki.
