We owe much of our awareness of these marvellous treasures to the disconcerting eye and intelligent action of Sir Percival David, the distinguished connoisseur who was one of the first to understand and preserve them. Sir Percival’s renowned collection, now housed at the University of London, forms an original source of information on the history, philosophy, and traditions of China. Many of the fifty-six priceless objects presented in this volume were once owned by Chinese emperors. All are extraordinary specimens. Ranging in date from the ninth to eighteenth centuries, they epitomize the sophistication of Chinese taste. Enlightening essays by scholars of Chinese art describe the worldwide significance of Chinese ceramics and review recent archaeological developments contributing to their study. Imperial Taste: Chinese Ceramics from the Percival David Foundation is published in association with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London. Fair/No Jacket.
