Freta, Warszawa from January to June 2010 with 187 works of art from Burma/Myanmar.; "I visited Burma for the first time in 1973. Only after 30 years I managed to come back to the "Golden Land" as that country is called. In September 2007, after my exploration trip to Myanmar (official name of Burma) I brought to Poland more than 100 objects of high artistic value representing Burmese traditional art and handicraft. It was the beginning of my new adventure with that Southeast Asia's country which resulted in creating a new, unique collection for the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw. My new fascination forced me to widen my knowledge about Burma together with developing the collection of wonderful art. Following next two expeditions to Myanmar, in September and December 2008, I had amassed more than 400 further artifacts. Therefore the museum's collection, during a 2 years period, has became enriched with a significant group of objects representing Burmese art and handicraft, which until today never has been present neither in our museum nor in any other Polish museum. The most valuable artifacts consist of mostly ceremonial objects made of famous Burmese lacquer. Besides the lacquer-ware very interesting are sculptures, made of alabaster, polychrome and gilded as well as small, wooden or stone sculptures and relieves with a rich, diversified iconography depicting Bubbha, his apprentices and monks, as well as deities and heroes of Hindu myths and Burmese history. A very interesting group of objects is represented by traditional Burmese theater puppets: large-scale wooden marionettes, multicolored and dressed in textile costumes. They have flexible heads, arms, legs and even eyes. The other valuable artifacts consist of kammavasa manuscripts - Buddhist and Hindu books, textiles, decorations, works of art of various ethnic groups inhabiting Burma and very rare musical instruments, among them the ritual rain-making dong-son drum and a crocodile-shaped harp. Until recently the Burmese collection of the Asia and Pacific Museum was rather small. The new acquisitions created a real collection - valuable and diversified, unique and a real collection - valuable and diversified, unique and significant in the scale of Europe and the world." excerpt from the introductory text by Andrzej Wawrzyniak, Director of the Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw.
