The vessel is the earliest in the exhibition by approximately fifty years, and anticipates many characteristics that came to fruition by the 8th century and are evident in high Tang pottery. These include the lavish use of rich lead glazes, the 'exotic' influences from outside China on the shape and decoration of vessels, and the interrelation and extensive borrowing between different media such as textiles, metalwork and ceramics.
