Through Dejima, many delicious fruits of Western civilization were imported into Japan over the passing years and they provided the present-day science and culture of Japan with a firm foundation. The site of old Deshima has veen preserved as a national historical monument since the 12th of October, 1922. As a part of its activities for improved preservation at this historical site of old Deshima, Nagasaki City is publishing Deshima, its Pictorial Heritage, a collection of drawings and paintins of Dejima now located in and out of Japan." excerpt from the introductory text by Hitoshi MOTOSHIMA.; "The atmosphere of old Deshima lingers on in sketch maps and genre paintings as well as in many pieces of prose and verse. These works of art and literature have so far been valued primarily for their exoticism. No systematic and comprehensive study of them has ever been made with intention of clarifying their condition and historical value. In order to fill this gap, with the guidance of the National Agency for Cultural Affairs and under the auspices of Nagasaki City, the seven of us have since 1978 worked in cooperation to locate, photograph and examine these works and also written captions, notes and articles on them. More then three hundred items dating from the past three centuries have been found not only in Japan but also in Europe and America. Together they provide a portrait of the changing spectacle of Deshima from its beginnings in 1634 to its end in 1904. The life and activities of the Dutch merchants and the Japanese there, - in brief the whole aspect of this unique and singular spot in Tokugawa Japan, - are captured in these works. We believe the results of our research are worthy of perusal in order to understand Deshima as it was and in order to promote friendly relations with foreign countries.
