He was also a member of the University Officers Training Corps and on 14th August 1914 was commissioned into the West Yorkshire Regiment. He did not sail for France until 20th July 1916 as one of several hundred re-inforcements for the Regiment's 2nd Battalion after they had lost three quarters of their strength in the July offensive.
