With portraits.Letters to the directors of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Amsterdam written by the fourth governor-general of the East Indies Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1587-1629), the great but disputed founder of the Company''s power in Asia and the builder of Batavia. Vol. I contains Coen's letters up to 1623; these are very readable because Coen wrote in an excellent style. Vol. II and III contains his letters to his collaborators in Asia and resolutions taken during his government. Vol. IV contains the judicial verdicts pronounced during his tenure of office, as well as the letters addressed to him by the directors of the Company in Holland. Vol. V presents all the documents which concern his second term of office. Vol. VII (2 parts) contain all the letters from many parts of Asia that had been addressed to Coen, with extensive annotations (Coolhaas p.40-41). Not present as always Vol. VI containing his biography. - A fine ste of a main source.
