 1553803167,
Mount Vernon NY, Peter Pauper Press, 1965. 1st Edition. Hardcover. FIRST PRINTING OF THIS EDITION WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ERIC CARLE. THE FIRST BOOK IN WHICH CARLE USED HIS DISTINCTIVE COLLAGE STYLE OF ILLUSTRATION. Hardcover book and dustjacket in good to very good condition. The book is clean, tuight, and unmarked save for a mark on pp. 16-19 where an old paper clip left an indentation. The jacket has mild shelfwear plus a one-inch closed tear along the right edge of the front cover. The jacket is safely enclosed in a removable protective mylar cover. An early work by Carle which was published before he became famous for his children's books BROWN BEAR and THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR. Carle began illustrating books in the late 1950s including dustjacket art for several science fiction novels. His first children's books are beginning books about science and math and are illustrated in a classic style with straight lines. With this edition of Aesop, we see the first example of his use of animal motifs and the collage artistic style for which he became famous. Various online sources claim Carle's 1967 book BROWN BEAR as his first illutrsated book, a claim which is simply wrong. In fact, this edition of Aesop is the first example of Carle's animal illustrations. This is an uncommon edition whiuch is seldom found in collectible condition. .
