- THE CHROMOLITHOGRAPH: A JOURNAL OF ART LITERATURE,DECORATION AND THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ..Volume 1

London, Zorn & Co. 1867-1968 plates [ 76 mostly chromolithographs but a few pencil drawings on sepia back-grounds] All tipped onto inserted lettered mounts. . Large Royal 8vo {29 x 20cm] blue half calf on 5 raised bands, spine gilt with red title label marbled paper sides (corners bumped/edges worn) 378pp The early issus did not have a titlepage as the Journal was bound from monthly paper issues. The issues came to a halt between Nov. 23 1867 to Sept 26 1868. During this period the Journal was suspended as a buyer was looked for and this is explained on p 191 by the new proprietor, Messrs Zorn and Co. who bought the Journal. The pages are clean but there is some offsetting, usually only to the blank verso of the plates. Two or three illustrations have a crease as the plates are tipped in only along one edge, also a few words are damaged by adhesion from an opposite plate on page 246. The front endpaper is signed R.[?] Hill and there is a small label removed from the pastedown. The Index leaf has a line erased but the word "Sheffield" still present. Despite take-overs this was a short lived Journal that is quite scarce. The final leaf is rather foxed. *Articles make up the text by the foremost artists of the time. Penley, Audsley, Tymms etc. The plates are not always with their respective article and the number of chromoliths seems to vary though ours seems to have the largest number of chromoliths & plates.
