Ruins on a mountain on the far bank of the river. Reeds and a fountain in the foreground, and some grazing cattle with a shepherd in the middle distance. With a Latin caption: "Muscosi fontes et somno mollior herba, et quae vos rara viridis tegit arbutus umbra, solstitium pecori defendite." (Virgil, Eclogues 7.45: "You mossy springs, and grass softer than sleep, and the green arbute that shields you with scanty shade, ward the noontide heat from my flock.")Etching hand laid paper, sheet size 278 x 183 mm., platemark 203 x 162 mm. Made by Pieter Schenck after his own design, and published by him in Amsterdam, c. 1685-1710, as the sixth print in a series of six. Pieter Schenck (Elberfeld 1660-1711 Leipzig) was a German-born printmaker and publisher, who married into the Valck family of engravers from Amsterdam. He worked in Leipzig and Berlin before moving back to Amsterdam at the end of his life.In good condition, with ample margins. A stain in the right margin, on the image edge. Creasing in the top left corner (one crease extending into the image), dampstained left and right margin edges (not affecting image).References: Hollstein 108 (only state).
