Mildly edgeworn and a tad age toned and corner bumped; some inner hinges once delicate but expertly, archivally strengthened, thus tight -- and internally near fine and bright. A tight and attractive first British edition of this triple decker "Romance of English History" -- "The Authorized English Translation of Victor Hugo's l'Homme Qui Rit" note title pages, with title alone in red. First published in French in 1869 as (literal translation) "The Man Who Laughs," it first appeared in the English language in the New York (Appleton) edition of 1869. SADLEIR 1236. .
