Du Choul, Guilielmo. - Veterum Romanorum religio, castrametatio, disciplina militaris ut & balneae. Ex antiquis numismatibus & lapidibus demonstrata. è Gallico in Latinum translata. [AND:] De castrametatione et disciplina militari romanorum. [TWO PARTS].

Amstelaedami, Janssonio-Waesbergiose [Amsteldam, Janssonius-van Waesberge], 1686. Hardcover. Two parts in one volume. Royal octavo (220 x 165mm). Pp. (iv), 278, (24); (2), 121, (3). Numerous errors in pagination. With about 550 impressions of coins, beautifully engraved on copper, and about 90 other such illustrations, mostly full-page, depicting military dress and accoutrement, army maneuver, drill, fortifications, etc. as well as other, civil subjects. Title-page printed in red and black, with illustrated device. Woodcut initials, shoulder notes; few leaves bit marginally soiled, old repair for a tear to one leaf without loss. HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary full calf, beautifully rebacked and re-cornered, spine with raised bands, gilt fleuron stamped in four compartments, gilt lettering in remainder, all edges sprinkled. Overall an excellent copy with fine, strong strikes of plates, by far the cleanest and brightest we have ever came across. ~ First published in French in 1555. Du Choul's Classical work on ancient Roman coinage, religion, and army. First translated into Latin in 1685, that edition incorporated a frontispiece and a folding table. Both title-page and frontispiece were dated 1685, the title-page in Roman, MDCLXXXV. Demand for the book proved high and in 1686, a completely identical edition was printed, using the same plates and letterpress. This edition, with the title-page newly dated MDCLXXXVI, sometimes included the frontispiece, with the old "1685", as well as a folding table, sometime not, as is the case here with the present copy. The wonderful engravings are based on the woodcuts that illustrated the original French version, attributed to Pierre Esckrih. They were considered the best numismatic illustrations of the 16th century. Lipsius p. 82. A beautiful copy. C-3 .
