Breslau, Schletter's Buchhandlung (H. Skutsch), 1862. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete. Marbled paper over boards, leather over tips and spine, but considerable scuffing thereto, and front board is present, not detached, but split, with strings showing, so handle with care. Ex-library copy with two accession stickers to spine, ink-stamp at first endpapers, title page, else surprisingly bright and clean of interior but for previous owner's inscription dated 1872. Mostly German language social history of the Jews in Munich, Germany, and with a special focus on inscriptions and coins, but also with Greek and Hebrew lettering here and there. M.A. Levy was a German Jew Orientalist, born at Altona (1817) and died at Breslau (1872). He became and for thirty years practiced as a Professor at the Synagogen-Gemeinde of Breslau, and pioneered the field of Semitic paleography, eventually learning how to decipher and interpret "Phoenician, old Hebrew, Punic, Aramaic, Himyaritic, and later Hebrew coins, seals, gems, and monuments" (Singer and Haneman, tThe Jewish Encyclopedia). 163 pp. and with a list of the black-and-white illustrations in-text.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
