[COLDEN, Cadwallader] - A Steel Engraving of Cadwallader Colden of the Province of New York 1850.A trifle age-toned at the margins, one corner slightly wrinkled,Colden (1688-1776) was a physician, natural scientest and lieutenant-governor for the Province of New York (i.e. New York State). He served as the first Colonial representative to the Iroquois Confederacy, an experience that resulted in his writing 'The History of the Five Indian Nations' (published 1777), the first book on the subject. An armorial crest appears above the facsimile signature. The engraving is impressed on heavy unwatermarked paper (similar to arches paper), and the engraver is identified as V. Balch & Co. This engraving originally appeared in the book 'The Documentary History of the State of New York', published by Weed, Parsons & Co. The engraving measures 22 x 14 cms.
