Mulgrave, (John Sheffield) Earl of Mulgrave - AN ESSAY ON POETRY

London, H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-side 1709 . Octavo (17.5x11cm) disbound titlepage with first word of title just at top edge of page as are parentheses of next page number (3) but neither is actually cropped, other margins are all present. Titlepage with 4 printers's ornaments between 2 ruled lines, 16 pages. Usual slight browning else neat. An Essay Upon Poetry is written in couplets and describes the main forms of poetry - songs, elegies, odes, satyr [ie satire] and plays in that order. Misprint on page 10 is corrected in margin in ink {neat and not recent]. *Sheffield led an adventurous life starting in the navy, often in trouble, both in politics and out of favour. Pope admired this Essay and although often attributed to Drydan (it appeared in his collected works) Dryden may actually have had some minor contributions to the poem it is now firmly acknowledged to be Sheffield's work.
