A full catalogue of these ceramics by John Ayers was published in four volumes between 1969-74, but this much-sought after work had long been out of print. The present more condensed choice of 342 of the finest pieces is illustrated wholly in colour with many details including marks and inscriptions, and an extensive Introduction discussing recent advances in scholarship. Volume 1 includes Tang, Song and Ming wares including many masterpieces of the art; Volume 2 is devoted to incomparable series of Qing porcelains, which feature an unparalleled range of monochrome-glazed wares. John Ayers, a former Keeper of the Far Eastern Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum and ex-President of the Oriental Ceramics Society, is responsible for a significant body of writings on Chinese ceramics and other arts, and is widely recognised as one of the world's leading specialists in the field.
