Crown 8vo (180 x 128mm): [8]pp, with six color lithographs (printed by Emrik & Binger, Haarlem), each with flaps that, when flipped, reveal a completely different image (a ship at sea becomes Bedouins in the desert, a volcano erupts into walruses in the Arctic, Native Americans transform into explorers in the Rockies), taking the viewer on a tour around the world. Each illustration actually consists of two illustrations made from strips of paper which slide across each other. The reader pulls a card tab, and the scene slides to one side to reveal a different scene. The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green, gold, and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production, all but pristine, rare, with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page, adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text, most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children's books. In the Netherlands, ‘De nieuwe rijschool' [The new riding school], published in 1856, was the first movable children's book, which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom (1814-1884) was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam, issuing such titles as Kindervreugd (1864), Robinson Crusoë (c.1865), and Kunstenmakers at work (1875). Andriessen's first books were published under the pseudonym Pieter Jacobsz. Under his own name he wrote a series of romantic stories for young people, mainly derived from Dutch national history. N. Payment:
All purchases must be paid in advance by check drawn on a U.S. bank, wire transfer, PayPal, or credit card. Libraries and institutions may arrange deferred billing; credit terms are settlement within 30 days of the date of invoice, unless agreed otherwise at time of sale. Bona fide rare and antiquarian booksellers (in other words, those from whom we might be interested in buying) may deduct their reciprocal discount, provided the account is paid in full by check within 10 days of the date of invoice. New York State residents without a current resale certificate (ST-120) on file will be charged 8.875% sales tax. All items remain the property of Fine Editions Ltd until payment is made in full.

Returns:
Any item may be returned if found unsatisfactory for any reason within 10 days of purchase, with prior notification via email. Refunds are limited to the original purchase price, including initial delivery costs. Returns must be carefully packaged and promptly shipped.

Standard shipping (UPS Media Mail) to any address in the United States is free (for direct website orders only), although oversize books and sets may incur charges. For domestic Priority shipping, add $13.50 for the first item and $2.50 for each additional item (with the exception of oversize items and sets). Delivery confirmation and insurance are provided at our expense. All International orders are sent via airmail, with rate depending on weight and size. Most octavo sized-books can be shipped for $28.50 ($26.50 to Canada and Mexico). Priority Mail International shipping is available, beginning at $65.
