Rare oval portrait in enamel, mounted on green linen and cardboard base. Portrait size 8 x 6.5 cm. Size of ground 17 x 10 cm. Probably made in France as propaganda during the French-German war. Enamel is a layer(s) of glass applied to metal or pottery objects for decoration. This portrait used beautiful and bright colours: green, yellow, black, and white. Gustaaf II Adolf (1594 - 1632), also called Gustaaf Adolf the Great or the Lion of the North, was king of Sweden from 1611 until his death in 1632. He was the son and successor of Charles IX of Sweden and of Christina of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp and the father of Queen Christina. He pursued an expansive foreign policy and won wars against Denmark, Tsardom Russia, and Poland. Gustaaf Adolf was a military genius and admirer of Maurice of Orange, whose innovations he studied closely. Above all, he was one of the protagonists of the Thirty Years' War and threw himself into the struggle for the Protestant cause. Following his established custom, he ordered a religious exercise before the attack and chanted the song, A solid fortress is our God!, Luther's song. At this, his heroes sang the song he himself had composed: Be not afraid, ye little procession! How loudly the enemy's hubris, His anger wants to hurt us. God is with us, we are with God! He will grant victory to us..
