Alexandroff, W. & A. - Le Premier Et le Plus Grand Etablissement de la Russie, "Aquarium

St. Petersburg, E. T. Marcus, 1912. Three-panel folding brochure, opening to a single sheet; 8 x 14 unfolded; chromolithographed, gilded illustrations to recto, text to verso; light wear along edges; in very good condition. Title in French, text in Russian. A stunning program, with fancy chromolithograph panels and much gilt, it advertised an elaborate variety show at the "largest establishment in Russia," with a wide range of 39 different acts, including singers, performers, and even Chinese acrobats. The Aquarium was an entertainment theater-garden, founded in 1886 by the Alexandrov brothers. Initially, it was intended as a large aquarium (thus the name), populated with animals and fish with the assistance of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists, where lectures and demonstrations would be held. Ultimately, a restaurant would be built, a permanent symphony orchestra would be staged, and an Ice House would be erected. In 1896, during the intermission of Victor Roger's operetta "Alfred Pasha in Paris", the first film screening in Russia would take place. Other attractions included a skating rink, beauty contests, fireworks shows, etc. During the First World War, an infirmary was placed on the territory of the garden. The complex was closed down in 1923. Very good .
