St-LUKASGILDE ( Antwerpen ) - Désiré van SPILBEECK - BUSCHMANN ( editors - publishers ) : - De Vlaemsche School . Tydschrift voor Kunsten , Letteren , Wetenschappen en Nyverheid. Uitgegeven door de St-Lukasgilde ( later ) De Vlaamsche School Nieuwe Reeks. Year 1855 - 1901 . Complete run ( 46 consecutive years ).Antwerpen, Sint-Lukasgilde ( first editor) , P. Génard , D. Van Spilbeeck , J.E.Buschmann ( later editors ), format varies in-4°, in-folio,. Complete run of 46 years : 1855 - 1901, all published, bound in 19 volumes and the last 5 years are unbound with the original stiff wrappers with the woodcut design by Charles Doudelet. Some bindings contain 2 or 3 years. The bindings are not uniform. 9 volumes are in contemporary black or red half-leather; the other 10 volumes are in modern red cloth, with leather title label on spine. Some of the older bindings show some minor wear, there is also occasionally some foxing. On the whole a very good set. This run of the periodical is absolutely complete with all the illustrations : photo engravings, woodcuts, etchings, copper engravings, etc. It contains e.g. original graphics by Charles Mertens, Piet Verhaert , Theodore Verstraete, Frans Hens, Jakob Maris, Jos. Ratinckx , Josué Dupon, Eugène Van Mieghem. In the early years the original graphics were often printed in the text, an expensive method of printing which needed a double run on the printing press. Twice during its career the periodical had a rather drastic editorial change. It started as a general art periodical with points of interest outside the ''arts''. From 1888 onwards it focused on arts and literature; with a new subtitle ''Nieuwe Reeks'' , and a larger format. In 1897 , under the influence of the ''Art Nouveau'' mouvement the periodical received another important typographical and editorial renewal which brought it in line with the French '' Art & Décoration '' ( started in the same year ) and the English '' Studio ''. ( from 1893). The beautiful covers , printed on thick coloured paper, were designed by Charles ( Karel ) Doudelet. These last 5 years are present in the collection in their original form, with the wrappers, unbound, as issued, in a nearly pristine condition. The ''Vlaamse School'' was the leading art periodical in Belgium during the second half of the 19th c. It was also one of the leading periodicals in the Dutch speaking area ( The Netherlands and Flanders). Its main points of interest were the art of the Netherlands, the Southern Netherlands and the Antwerp school of painting in the second half of the 19th. c. It remains a striking example of the cultural and artistic rebirth of the Flemish people in the 19th c. In 1902 the publication was replaced by a new periodical ( by the same editor ) '' Onze Kunst '' which lasted until 1929. A collection of ''Vlaamse School'', with all the illustrations present is of the utmost rarety. .
