Amsterdam, Johannes Allart [1798-1801]. 8vo. l George Staunton, diplomat, Orientalist and botanist was secretary to a British Mission to the Chinese Imperial Court in 1793. The mission was headed by Stanton's friend Lord Macartney. The mission did not obtain any concession from China, but brought back very detailed information. This work was taken chiefly from the papers of Lord Macartney and from the papers of Sir Erasmus Gower, commander of the expedition. 7 vol. Bound in half cloth, marbled paper boards (modern bindings). Complete with all 46 mostly folding plates and maps and text engravings. A plate of a Chinese pelican coloured by hand.
