CROSSLEY F.H. - The English Abbey. Its Life and Work in the Middle Ages. With a Foreword by Lord Harlech. Illustrated by Photographs by the Author and Others, and by Drawings by Brian Cook. Second Edition, Revised. [Second Impression thus]. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN DUSTWRAPPER

Batsford,, [1942]. 8vo., Second Impression thus, with coloured frontispiece, 2 coloured plates, 135 monochrome plates on 98, very numerous illustrations and double-page map in the text, 2 large folding plans, and front and rear endpaper plans; original grey cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in blue, a very good, bright, clean copy in price-clipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly sunned at backstrip. Published in Batsford's well-known 'British Heritage' series with striking wrap-around dustwrapper artwork by Brian Cook. Crossley's classic account was first published in 1935. The substantially revised second edition was published just before the outbreak of war. The text was corrected, the county list of abbies made more complete and the index entirely remade and extended. The illustrations in particular were completely overhauled, omitting several and substituting others deemed more suitable or informative. In this wartime second impression, gone alas, is the laid paper of the earlier work, but this is a bright copy nevertheless.
