Tan cloth covers have red lettering to the spine and an illustration of a shield, tomahawk and peace pipe on the front cover. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The tan covers have spots of ground-in dirt and there is a small, but noticeable bump to the top front cover edge. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a crack to the front inner hinge which has been repaired. Illustrated with four black and white plates by Frederic Remington, including the frontispiece "The War Whoop". "Francis Parkman, Jr. (September 16, 1823 – November 8, 1893) was an American historian, best known as author of The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life and his monumental seven-volume France and England in North America. These works are still valued as historical sources and as literature. He was also a leading horticulturist, briefly a professor of Horticulture at Harvard University and author of several books on the topic.
