IX, 247/8: Helvetius was a French writer and philosopher. The first ed. (1758) was burned by the authorities in 1759: Ellenberger, 623/33: 'The idea that the central drive in human nature is the striving for superiority has been expressed often and in many ways. Helvetius held that the mainspring of human action was a wish to be as powerful as possible in order to control others and thus to be alble to gratify one's passions'. Comp.
