[The Sun, special issue]. A lavishly and beautifully designed 'catalogue', feaaturing modern Japanese Kimonos dyed by Itchiku Kubata with a [modern] dye Tsjujigahana as developed by this master of dyeing. Kubota's inspiration has been a type of dye called Tsjujigahana, which was widely used in Japan from the middle of the Muromachi period (1333-1573) until the Momoyama period (1573-1615), but was soon completely replaced by the Yuzen dyes of the Edo period (1615-1668). Tsujigahana was basically an elegant form of Tie-deying, supplemented here and there with handpainted designs and embroidery. Instiead of trying merely to duplicate Tsjujigahana's works, that have been preserved, Itchiku Kubota has developed a modern version of his own, suited to contemporary use. In doing so, he has succeeded by long and patience experimenting in deying modern chemical dyes in many levels-something that was until his time considered impossible. His version of the ancient method, which he calls Itchiku Tsujigahana, has gained wide praise both in Japan and abrroad. Very fine copy.
