He was adopted by a peasant family &. when caught stealing at 10 was sent to a reformatory. Later he joined the Foreign Legion but quickly deserted. For many years he wandered through Europe begging, thieving & smuggling & spent time in almosts every country through which he passed. He escaped life imprisonment & was granted a pardon by the president after a group of eminent writers & artists submitted a petition. He spent many years in intense creative activity & became a legendary figure. Edge wear.
