EARLY EDITION.6mo.(5.6 x 3.6 inches).Engraved frontis,100,4pp publishers adverts.Lacking both blank free endpapers but all printed pages present.Small tear,without loss,to the bottom inner margin of one leaf.Neat early inscription to front paste down endpaper---M.Fosters love to Miss Toone and begs her acceptance of this book if she likes it.---Miss Toone's name and address written neatly on blank rear of frontis.Some spotting to a few leaves and edges a bit rubbed but overall very good in publishers green roan backed boards with gilt ruling.Marbled paper on boards.Edges bumped.-----A rare work.Not dated but listed in the Osborne Collection catalogue with date of circa 1820.No copy in the British Library catalogue.A search of Copac shows just one copy,a reprint of 1829 with fewer pages(89pp) in the National Library of Scotland,possibly a mis-collation.-The Oliver and Boyd ledgers,in the National Library of Scotland,show that in 1829 a new set of 16 wood blocks were commissioned by one artist.These were to replace the earlier edition that was made up of two sets of illustrations (6 and 10),by different artists.The artist of these new 16 blocks is unknown but one illustration has the intitials "FC" in the corner,possibly the engraver Frederick Craig.
