[Guenée, A., ed.] - Lettres de quelques juifs portugais et allemands, à M. de Voltaire, avec des réflexions critiques.

Paris: Moutard, 1772 (2 vols.); xx+473(+3), vi+476pp., footnotes, small vignettes, sm8vo (20 cm), marbled end-pages, original full leather w. raised bands, decorated spines and title shields. A very good set of the rare third edition. ¶ The French theologian Antoine Guenée (1717-1803) defends the bible and the jews against the sarcastic attacks of the great Enlightened philosopher Voltaire. This is not a defence of the or a church, but of religion. Voltaire, although quite anti-jewish, appreciated the knowledge and esprit of this 'sécrétaire juif'. In this book many letters of Dutch jews of Amsterdam and Utrecht are quoted. Later editions are in 3 vols, this one is complete in 2.
