In 1563 the Institutes of Giovanni Paolo Lancelotti (1522-1590), professor at Perugia, were added to the Corpus with official sanction in 1580 as Appendix Pauli Lanceloti. After the reforms of the Council of Trent the whole of the foregoing collections were in 1582 re-edited by a commission of cardinals and doctors. In 1582 all these collections received the sanction of Pope Gregory XIII, and were thereafter known as the Corpus Juris Canonici, It remained the only authenticated collection of material for the Western Church until the promulgation of the Code of Canon Law in 1917.
