Smit, Jan II (fl. 1741-1748) - De Nieuwe Tuin (Amsterdam Theater Decorations, series of 12 plates)

The stage of the Amsterdam Theater with a representation of the so called 'New Garden'. Lettered on the bottom:'De Nieuwe Tuin. De Schrandere Agatha, op dat zy wys belette Dat Govert haar, in spyt van Eelhart, neem ten echt, Veinst, stelt zich zinloos aan en danst een Scarmousette. De Liefde is altijd juist zo zot niet als men zegt.' Realized with three plates: one of the stage, another for the proscenium arch, public and orchestra and a third for the text on the bottom. The second plate is signed:'Te Amsterdam by J. SMIT met Privilegie'l Etching on paper with margins; internal plate: 149 x 270 ca. (irregular border); framing plate: 304 x 452 mm; third plate: 42 x 353 mm; total: 430 x 565mm; top right margin folded
