BUTLER, SAMUEL - Hudibras [Three Parts Bound in One]

London, Printed by Tho. Warren, for Henry Herringman to Be Sold by Jacob Tonson... 1700. (Leatherbound) Good. 350pp; 230pp. Three Parts, bound in one; Parts 1 and 2 continuous. 12mo. Bound in period full speckled calf; later quarter-leather backstrip, though certainly an antiquarian repair. Top and bottom board blindstamped with simply center piece, floral corners. Binding style indicative of the "basic pattern" panel stamping done throughout the 18th century, as described by Pearson in English Bookbinding Styles, 1450-1800; a design which is similar in its base style to the basic panel stamps of the mid-16th-17th centuries. Spine with five raised bands, simple compartments, title compartment in paper, lettered in ink (paper label and ink heavily aged, toned). Boards show wear, rubbing, most notably at extremities; hinges beginning to crack, starting at inner gutters; chords remain entirely secure, and the textblock tight. Front free end paper loose, laid-in. Textblock notably age-toned, with occasional foxing. An attractive antiquarian copy of this class work, at an accessible price.
