The plates are irregularly numbered. Contemporary calf, spine with five raised bands, richly gilt and title label, r.e., somewhat rubbed. First French edition, translated from the Italian (Venice 1774). Alberto Fortis was an Augustinian monk and naturalist who travelled in Dalmatia between 1771 and 1774. This work deals with the geology, natural history of the country, and customs and manners of the inhabitants. Interesting descriptions of Zara, Sebenico, Spalato, Macarska, and the islands of Lissa, Pelagosa, Lesina, etc. The plates depict views, native costumes, ruins, fossils etc. At end an appendix: "Iter Buda Hadrianipolim ..." by Antonio Veranzio, Bishop of Buda, about his journey from Budapest to Constantinople in 1553 to conclude a peace treaty on behalf of Ferdinand I with Suleiman the Magnificent, edited by Fortis.
