Warsaw, Publishing House Tushiyah, 1898-1907. Most volumes are loose, due to the weakness of the sewing-thread. Yellowing brittle paper. First pages of most volumes are damaged, due to the poor quality of the paper used. Orig. cloth, worn. Corners bumped. HEBREW FICTION. Rare collection of a literary series published by the pioneer of modern Hebrew publishing. Abr. Shalkovich (1867-1921), Russian Hebrew author, settled in Warsaw in 1891 and started a new medium of spreading Hebrew literature with the {Sifrei Agurah} (the "one penny") series of attractive and reasonably priced booklets. In 1893 he set up the Achiasaf publishing house and published the {Luach Achiasaf}. In 1896 he started a new publishing house Tushiyyah, publishing several series of literature, of which the {Bibliotheka Ivrit} was the largest and most successfull. See Enc. Jud. 14, p. 1268-1269. Most contributors to the {Bibliotheka Ivrit} are from Russian origin, among them M.J. Berdyczcewski, Simeon Berman, Simon Bernfeld, Isaiah Bershadsky, Ch.N. Bialik, Reuben Brainin, J.Ch. Brenner, Jacob Cohen, Jacob Fraenkel, Ezriel Nathan Frank, David Frischmann, Simon Frug, Uri Nissan Gnessin, Ezra Goldin, Chayyim Horowitz, Aaron Abr. Kabak, Abr. Kahana, Joseph Klausner, Lipman Levin, Jechiel Levontin, Aaron Luboshitzki, L. Mekler, I.L. Peretz, David Philipson, Alex. Siskind Rabinowitz, Saul Phinekas Rabbinowitz, Jacob Raisin, Max Raisin, Gershon Shofman, Zalman Shneour, Nahum Slouschz, Judah Steinberg, Israel Tawiow, Saul Tchernichowski, David Yellin.
