Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865) became private secretary to Earl Bathurst and was clerk of the Privy Council 1821-1859, where his position gave him peculiar facilities for studying court and public life. In his memoirs we can follow the pageant of history from the days of the Regency to those of mid Victorian England, read his description of all the important events from the battle of Waterloo to the opening of the Great Exhibition, and he gives the 'inside information' on political cahnges.
