In May 1808, the Spanish people exploded into a nation wide revolt against Napoleon's attempt to dominate their country, after he had deposed their royal family and placed his brother Joseph Bonaparte on the throne. This was the beginning of the five year long Peninsula War, and one of the first Spanish cities to become a centre of resistance was Saragossa, the ancient capital of Aragon and the leader of the insurrection was Don Jose Palafox. 14 illustrations.
