- Les Aventures de Maitre Tetu0. et de Miss Docile. Conte Allegorique. Traduit de l'Anglais pour l'instruction de la Jeunesse. Paris: Delarue,& Lille: Castiaux, n.d. [c. 1820?]; oblong 16mo (c. 12.5 x 11 cm).; 63 pp. with frontispiece and seven plates, all wood-cuts, coloured by hand; publisher's printed boards, title within an decorative border on front, illustration within same border on rear board; lacking spine, boards marked and a little darkened, original owner's name on half-title, text lightly spotted. An extremely rare French children's book, printed in Lille, an allegorical moral purportedly based on an English original. Experts have been consulted in vain to find an English book of which this could be a version, but it could nevertheless have been taken from an English source which was part of a larger collection of moral tales. The wood-cuts (hand-coloured as issued) are bold and very good. Two bear the initials C.S.J. in the block. The allegory itself shows Master Headstrong led astray by letting himself be led by Passion, but finally finding the path to Virtue and Religion through the good offices of Reason.
