. Pp. (xvi), 209, 230-619, (1). Contemporary half calf, spine with five raised bands and title label, rubbed. Copy of Ericsberg. First edition of Hasselquist's voyage to Egypt and the Near East, posthumously published by Linné (his former teacher), who said: "So admirable a travel journal has never before appeared". In 1749 Hasselquist sailed to Smyrna with the Levantiska Handelskompaniet, a Swedish trading company which had the rights to trade with the Levant from 1738 to 1756. From there he made scientific journeys to Anatolia and Magnesia (Greece) and on to Alexandria and Cairo where he stayed for a year. The following year he went to Jaffa and the Holy Land. He died at Smyrna aged only 30, burdened with depts. Queen Lovisa Ulrika helped out financially and a huge collection of material (plants, fish, stones, insects, oriental drugs and Arabic mss) was sent home. The work comprises three parts: the first is devoted to the travel journal; the second is a description of the natural history in Egypt and the Holy Land "Descriptiones Rerum Naturalium Praestantiorum"; and the last part contains Hasselquist's letters to Linné. Blackmer 790. Cox i, 230. Hulth p.105. Röhricht p.315. Schildt:" Linnés lärjungar" pp. 73-98. Soulsby 3577. Tobler p.130.
